Don’t Wait – Talk To A Mate
Introduction
Coach the Coach aims to reach men and women in rural Victoria through training key personnel of established community sporting organisations in Mental Health First Aid. Mental Health First Aid is an established early intervention tool aimed at raising awareness of mental health problems within sporting clubs and the wider community.
Australian Mental Health Statistics
- One in five Australian adults and children will suffer from some form of common mental disorder in any one year
- In 2005, there were 2,101 registered deaths from suicide.
- Males were almost 4 times more likely than females to die by suicide in 2005 (1,675 compared with 444 suicide deaths respectively)
- Suicide accounted for approximately 27% of all deaths for those aged 20 to 34 years in 2005.

Mental Health First Aid Training
Mental Health First Aid training aims to provide the skills to correctly identify mental health problems as well as the ability to effectively encourage individuals to seek necessary help. For further information please refer to www.mhfa.com.au
Training will particularly focus on the following themes:
- Assessing the risk of suicide or harm
- Listening non-judgementally
- Giving reassurance and information
- Encourage person to get appropriate professional help
- Encourage self-help strategies

Training will be provided at NO COST to the league or clubs
· Training will take place over 3 nights from 6pm-9.30pm with Food and Drinks provided
· Participants will be provided with a certificate recognising their participation as well as a Mental Health First Aid Manual
· 5 training positions available for each club – would hope to involve at least 2 individuals from football and at least 2 individuals from netball.
· Participants do not necessarily have to be coaches. Other personnel in the club who have a genuine interest in learning Mental Health First Aid are welcome. i.e. committee members, trainers, team managers as well as those who may not have an official role in the club but who are highly involved and committed.
Training Schedule
Mental Health First Aid training sessions are at central locations, thereby hopefully avoiding any unreasonable travel times for participants.
Travelling Roadshows
Following the Mental Health First Aid training sessions, and subject to available funds information and entertainment evenings known as ‘Travelling Roadshows’ will be organised in central locations. These ‘Roadshows’ will include entertainment and will be open to club members, family and friends. While providing the opportunity to get together and have a laugh, these nights will also include acknowledgement of Mental Health First Aid graduates.
